Guru Energy Drink Review (Superfruit)

For lunch today, I stopped by Whole Foods to pick up some food along with an energy drink called Guru Energy Drink. The particular flavor I tried was called Superfruit. I’ve been meaning to try more healthy energy drinks, and Whole Foods has quite a few to choose from.  This was my first time trying one of the Guru energy drinks so I was pretty excited.

After taking my first sip, I knew I was going to enjoy this drink. Essentially, it tastes like fruit punch. It’s very smooth and easy to drink. Guru Superfruit is non carbonated and it’s not overly sweet which made it truly enjoyable. Its taste is very palatable and I’m sure everyone would find this drink to their delight. Next time, I’m going to buy one and put one in the freezer so it gets nice and chilled. This will be extremely refreshing after one of my strenuous workouts.

As far as the AMPED factor goes, Guru Energy Drink doesn’t pack the power some of the other energy drinks provide. I this drink would be best suited for kids, or people who have a lower tolerance for the energy packed ingredients some of the big boys provide. It definitely helped increase mental alertness, focus, and it also doesn’t make you feel jittery or leave you feeling burnt out.

All in all, here is the final verdict:

Price: $2.69

Taste: 9.0 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 7.5 out of 10

LOST FIVE-0 Energy Drink Review

Today, I will be reviewing Lost Five-O Energy Drink. I picked up this interesting concoction at a Chevron gas station while getting my car washed. After doing a little research, I found out that this brand of energy drink is manufactured by Hansen Beverage Company. This explains its similarity in taste to Monster, which is manufactured by the same company.

Lost Five-0 comes in a very eccentric looking can. From a distance, it looks as if someone took a spray can and went to work. I’m not quite sure what the premise was behind the design, but it definitely caught my eye and sparked my curiosity.

The 16 oz. can of Lost Five-0 packs 32 g of sugar, B vitamins, Taurine, and a 2500 mg energy blend of glucose, glucuronolactone, panax ginseng, caffeine, L-carnitine, guarana, and maltodextrin.

To best describe the taste, it tastes like someone took some syrup from a can of fruit cocktail and mixed it with an original Monster. I respect the fact that they teamed up with Monster in making this drink, but I really wish they didn’t taste so similar. I mean, if I want something that tastes like Monster, I would just buy one of the Monster energy drinks. So, I guess my recommendation to Hansen is maybe to differentiate the taste more from their Monster counterpart.

After drinking Lost Five-0, it took around 15-20 minutes before I felt my energy buzz start kicking in.  Just like with the Monster drinks, Lost Five-0 certainly did not fail to get me AMPED. With all the energy it gave me, I almost started helping the guy wipe down my car. Two thumbs up for the AMPED factor.

Ok peeps, here’s my final verdict:

Price: $2.49

Taste: 8.0 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 8.5 out of 10

FRS Energy Drink Review (Lemon Lime)

FRS Healthy Energy is the first healthy energy drink I’ve tried thus far. I’m very happy to see that more and more healthy alternatives are becoming available. For those of you that are not familiar with the brand, FRS stands for Free Radical Scavenger. It’s a fitting name because it contains 325 mg of Quercitin, which is a powerful antioxidant found in the skins of apples, onions, and red grapes. It also contain 85 mg of green tea extract another source of antioxidants. Essentially, antioxidants are known to eliminate free radicals.

The FRS Healthy Energy Lemon Lime comes in a lime green can with a design in front that looks like something you’d see in chemistry class. The design is pretty plain in my opinion. I think they should put Lance Armstrong on the front or something since he does endorse the product and is a world famous athlete.

The 11.5 oz can of FRS Health Energy packs 325 mg of Quercitin, 85 mg of cattechins, 48 mg of caffeine, 29 g of sugar, and B Vitamins.

FRS lemon lime goes down very smooth and is not carbonated like your typical energy drink. To best describe the consistency, it’s pretty similar to one of Kern’s Nectar drinks. Overall, the taste is quite refreshing. It’s not sour or tart whatsoever, and there’s no wierd aftertaste. Also, don’t forget to shake the can before drinking. Otherwise, it will taste a little watery.

As far as getting me AMPED, FRS Health Energy drinks aren’t going to provide you with the big energy surge some of the big boy energy drinks provide. This drink is actually best if you want something that will give you energy bursts on a smaller scale for several hours. If you’re looking for something that will sustain your energy for long periods of time for activities that require great endurance like marathons for instance, then this is probably the drink for you. The great thing about FRS Health Energy drinks is that you’ll never crash or experience any jitters. Based on this alone, FRS Health Energy earns extra points on the AMPED scale.

Ok health nuts, here is my final verdict:

Price: $2.49

Taste: 8.5 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 8.5 out of 10

No Fear Super Energy Drink Review

On my first snowboarding trip last winter, I picked up the No Fear Super Energy drink in hope that it would give me enough energy to cut up the slopes until the sun went down. In actuality, I was going to need it for the countless times I fell on my ass, and the energy I’d exude trying to get back up. Trying No Fear energy drink was pretty fitting considering how apprehensive I was to try out this sport, but it was a blast!

The No Fear energy drink can is pretty awesome looking. It’s an all black can, and on the front is the No Fear logo and a wicked looking skull with wings. It’s very eye catching, and it’s something you’d want to be seen with if you’re partaking in some extreme sport, which is probably the whole intent of the design.

A 16 oz. can of No Fear Super Energy packs 174 mg of caffeine, 66 g of sugar, B vitamins, taurine, ginseng, guarana, L-carnitine, and L-arginine.

As far as taste goes, it definitely did not let me down. It was very pleasing to the taste buds with a nice citrus-grape flavor to it. There was no medicinal or wierd after taste which I much appreciated. I’ll definitely be drinking another one of these in the near future.

The final element to cover is the AMPED factor. After 20 minutes of chugging it down, I definitely felt the energy surge kick in. With all the caffeine and sugar in this bad boy, it was definitely able to provide the level of energy I needed to cut up the slopes. I’d say my energy buzz lasted a good 4 to 5 hours easily.

Alright dudes here’s the final verdict:

Price: $2.49

Taste: 8.5 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 8.5

Interesting Fact: 22 October, 2008 : - - Carlsbad, Ca — No Fear’s VP of Marketing, Britt Galland announced today that No Fear Energy is now the official energy drink sponsor of the NSSA. (globalsurfnews.com)

Rockstar Roasted Mocha Energy Drink Review

The energy drink I will be reviewing today is Rockstar Roasted Mocha. I’ve noticed more and more brands introducing coffee flavored energy drinks, and I think it’s pretty cool since I’m a big fan of coffee. I believe Monster has around 8 different coffee flavors and Rockstar has 3. A 15 oz can of Rockstar Roasted Mocha packs 120 mg of caffeine, 17 g of sugar, B vitamins, taurine, gingko biloba, guarana, L-carnitine, ginseng, and milk thistle extract.

As far as taste goes, there’s no bitterness or tart taste whatsoever. I was also expecting it to have a lot of carbonation, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s very smooth and easy to drink, but it tasted a tad bit like watered down chocolate milk. If i could suggest one thing to Rockstar, it would be to thicken it up a little bit.

If you needed a big energy boost early in the morning, needed to down something fast, and had a choice between this and a grande iced coffee from Starbucks, you’d probably want to choose this drink. It might be a little more expensive, but you’ll definitely get more bang, or should I say kick for your buck.

After drinking the Rockstar Roasted Mocha, I had a pretty nice energy buzz going. I was able to stay AMPED for a good 3 to 4 hours. If I didn’t have such a heavy lunch, my energy buzz would probably have lasted a little longer. Also, I’d like to add I experienced little if any jitters or crash with this one.

Ladies and gentleman, here’s my final verdict:

Price: $2.29

Taste: 7.5 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 8.5 out of 10

Monster Assault Energy Drink Review

On my way to the gym today I stopped by a CVS/pharmacy and picked up a Monster Assault. I’ve been meaning to try one of these for some time now, so I shelled out $2.65 (tax included) and bought one. The can has your standard Monster “M” on it, except in red, and instead of an all black can, it has a camouflage gray and black color scheme. On the can there’s some interesting content informing consumers that they’re neither for “the war” or against “the War”. Essentially, the message they want to send out is they’re out to battle any energy drink company in their way. So watch out!

Anyways, on to the taste. Monster Assault pretty much tastes like the original monster with a cherry twist to it. So, if you like Monster and the taste of cherry, then you’ll probably favor this one. To me, Monster Drinks taste a little too much like cough syrup, but this one does taste better than the Monster original.

I’m not sure of the exact amount of caffeine this drink contains, but it states on the can that it has a 2500 mg energy blend containing the following ingredients: L-Carnitine, Glucose, Caffeine, Guarana, Inositol, Glucuronolactone, and Maltodextrin.

I’ll have to admit, Monster drinks never fail to get me AMPED. After drinking the Monster Assult, I had enough energy to get through my workout and then some. When I got home I even had enough energy to cook a pretty nice dinner, clean up around the house, and write this blog! Typically, after a long day of work I usually only have enough energy to heat up a microwave dinner and call it a day. So while I’m still pretty AMPED, here’s the final verdict:

Price: $2.29

Taste: 7.5

AMPED Factor: 8.5

Venom Energy Drink Review (Mojave Rattler)

When I was at the grocery store last weekend, I felt the need for a little pick me up, so I decided to go check out if there were any new energy drinks that I could try. The energy drink that first caught my attention was Venom Energy Drink, which is made by Dr Pepper Snapple Group. The first thing I noticed was the cool bottle it was in.  It is contained in a pretty heavy duty container with a resealable cap, which is pretty cool in case you want to store it and drink it later. This was actually the first energy drink I’ve ever bought with that kind of feature. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. On front of the container is a really cool design of a rattle snake’s eye. I can tell the makers of Venom Energy Drink spent a lot of time and effort in the design. It just screams, you have to try me.

When I took my first sip, it was instantly refreshing. It tasted like the Original Rockstar with a tinge of grape. I also appreciated the fact that it didn’t leave a tart after taste, which a lot of the energy drinks out there do. It’s definitely one of the best tasting energy drinks I’ve tried thus far.

The 16 oz. bottle packs key ingredients such as 160 mg of caffeine, l-carnitine, ginseng, B vitamins, and of course taurine. I should also mention that it’s pretty low in calories and carbs, so it’s great for those who are watching their weight.

As far as getting me AMPED, it’s probably comparable to a Rockstar or Monster, which is cool in my book. My energy buzz lasted at least 3 to 4 hours easily. I breezed through doing some laundry, cleaned my car, and even squeezed in a workout. Thank you Mojave Rattler!

With that said, let’s get to the verdict:

Price: $2.29

Taste: 8.5 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 8.5 out of 10

Interesting Fact: Venom Energy’s C-suite
today got a little more exciting as the energy drink announced a
partnership with Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens and named him

Amp Energy Drink Review

There are three different brands of energy drinks in the vending machine at work, and AMP Energy Drink by Mountain Dew is one of them. I must say I love the name, I mean it does describe how I feel after drinking an energy drink “AMPED”.

After tasting it for the first time, I would say that AMP Energy is by far one of the better tasting energy drinks out on the market today IMO. It essentially tastes almost exactly like Mountain Dew with a slight tartness to it.

The 16 ounce can packs 142 milligrams of caffeine(kind of weak for a 16oz.), as well as MDX5, taurine, ginseng, B-vitamins, guarana and maltodextrin.

As far as the AMPED factor goes, usually if I drink one of these after lunch, I can stay amped for a good 2 to 2 1/2 hours. It’s not one of the strongest energy drinks on the market, but it makes up for it in taste.

All in all, here is the final verdict:

Price: $2.29 16oz.

Taste: 8.5 out 10

AMPED Factor: 7.5 out of 10

Interesting Fact:
One of the ingredients in Amp is Brominated Vegetable Oil aka BVO, which is used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soft drinks such as Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Powerade, Mello Yello, Pineapple and Orange Fanta, Sun Drop, Squirt and Fresca to help natural fat-soluble citrus flavors stay suspended in the drink and to produce a cloudy appearance. Monster Energy Drink Review

When it comes to energy drinks, Monster Energy Drink, is definitely still one of the major players in the game today. Monster has been in the game since 2002, so as you can see they have proven their longevity. I’ve tried the original Monster a couple of times, but I just could not get use to the taste. To me, it is a little too sweet, and it also has a slight medicinal taste to it. Unfortunately, it is not one of my favorites. As far as the AMPED factor goes, I’ll give them props in this area. I usually stay energized for at least 5-6 hours.

Red Bull Energy Drink Review

Red Bull was the first energy drink I, and I’m sure many others alike have ever tried. Red Bull definitely set the standard for all the energy drinks out on the market today. At first site, it’s not the most appealing looking, and it’s name is not the most enticing either. I mean Red Bull to me sounds like some sort of Russian Tonic that will grow hair on your back. However, back at that time there weren’t that many choices, so needless to say that’s the one I bought. Nowadays, you can pretty much find this drink everywhere, in gas stations, liquor stores, supermarkets, casinos, I mean everywhere. It’s especially popular in clubs and parties. For those party goers looking to have energy to dance all night, usually they’ll order a Red Bull and Vodka or a Jager Bomb (Jägermeister & Red Bull).  If I’m on the run, need an energy boost, and need to down something fast, this is my drink of choice. The 8 oz. can packs 80mg of caffeine, 27 g of sugar, B vitamins, and taurine, but those are just a highlight of a few of the energy providing ingredients. Flavor wise I wouldn’t say it’s the best tasting on the market, but its decent. To best describe it, I would say it taste like a combination of berry and citrus flavor. It’s a tad bit on the tart side, so that’s why I had to grade it down a little. As far as the AMPED factor goes, it provides a decent energy rush. Usually, I drink two of these on my long trips back from Vegas, which is 4 hours away. Those of you who’ve driven back from Vegas all know how exhausting that drive home can be, especially if you lost money. In conclusion, here is the verdict:

Price: $1.99

Taste: 7 out of 10

AMPED Factor: 7.5 out of 10

Interesting Fact: In 2006 over 3 Billion cans of Red Bull were sold in over 130 countries! (Wikipedia)
